What is Tree Planting & Establishment?
Successful tree planting starts long before the spade goes in — right species for the soil, right size for the budget, right place for the future canopy. We supply and plant everything from feathered whips to semi-mature standards across Staffordshire.
All stock is sourced from quality UK nurseries with appropriate provenance for the site. We handle delivery, planting, staking, mulching and the critical first-year aftercare.
Replacement planting after felling is often the perfect moment to upgrade species choice — moving from problem leylandii to something better suited to the long term.
Who It's For
- Homeowners replacing felled trees
- Estates planting new avenues or shelter belts
- Developers fulfilling planning conditions
- Schools, councils and community groups
When It's Needed
- Tree has been felled and replacement is wanted
- New planting for screening, shade or amenity
- Planning condition requires planting
- Avenue or shelter belt establishment
What Happens If You Leave It
Most newly planted trees fail in the first 2 years — wrong species, poor planting depth, inadequate watering, no stake support. The cost of replanting exceeds the original. Right-first-time saves money and decades of wait.
Cheap whips from a garden centre rarely survive transplant. Properly grown nursery stock with established root systems gives 90%+ survival; bargain-bin stock 30–50%.

Tree Planting & Establishment: The Full Detail
Stock Sizes & Establishment Time
Whips (60–120cm, bare root): cheapest, fastest establishment, slow visible impact — 5+ years to obvious tree. Feathered (1.5–2.5m): good middle ground for screening. Standards (2.5–3.5m, root-balled or container): instant impact, more expensive, slower establishment. Semi-mature (4m+): immediate visual effect, premium price, requires irrigation and aftercare contract.
For most domestic situations, feathered or light standard stock represents the best value. Semi-mature stock is for situations where instant presence is essential (commercial entrances, memorial trees).
Aftercare: Why Most Plantings Fail
Drought stress in the first 2 summers kills more new trees than anything else. We provide a written watering schedule and (for higher-value stock) can include monthly aftercare visits in the first year.
Mulching, weed control around the base and rabbit/deer protection are equally important. All included in our standard planting service.
Every job is covered by £5m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
