## What is Tree Felling?

Tree felling is the controlled removal of a tree at ground level. It sounds simple — until you factor in nearby fences, sheds, conservation rules and the sheer weight of timber being dropped. A 15-metre conifer can weigh well over a tonne, and getting that on the floor in one piece without damage takes planning, the right kit and a crew who do it every week.

RJ Hutchinson Tree Services has felled hundreds of trees across Stafford, Lichfield, Tamworth, Cannock and the surrounding villages. We work on everything from suburban back gardens with two-metre access gates to open paddocks and commercial estates. Where there's room to drop, we fell straight. Where there isn't, we climb and dismantle in sections — but it's always quoted up front.

Most felling jobs in Staffordshire take a single day, including stump grinding and waste removal if requested. Larger or more sensitive jobs are scoped properly, with traffic management or council notifications arranged in advance.

### Who It's For

- Homeowners with a dead, diseased or unwanted tree in the garden
- Landlords clearing properties between tenancies
- Builders and developers preparing sites for groundworks
- Estates and farms managing mature woodland edges
- Insurance assessors dealing with subsidence or storm damage claims

### When It's Needed

- The tree is dead, dying or showing fungal brackets at the base
- Roots are lifting paths, drives or driveways
- Branches overhang a roof, conservatory or neighbour's property
- It's blocking light or making the garden unusable
- Storm damage has left it leaning or split

## What Happens If You Leave It

Leaving a failing tree in place rarely ends well. Decay spreads silently from the base upward, and by the time you can see it from the ground, the structural strength of the trunk may already be compromised. A tree that looks fine in summer foliage can shed a major limb in the first autumn gale — typically across a fence, a car or a roof.

The other costly mistake is hiring 'a man with a chainsaw' off a Facebook ad. Without proper insurance, certified climbing kit and a trained ground crew, even a small felling job can go badly wrong. We're regularly called in to finish — or repair — jobs started by uninsured operators. The bill, in those cases, lands on the homeowner.

Council fines for felling a protected tree without permission start at £2,500 and can reach £20,000. We check Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Area status free of charge before any work starts.

### Site Left Tidy

All chip swept, logs stacked or removed, ground raked — back to how you'd want it.

## Tree Felling: The Full Detail

### Straight Felling vs Sectional Dismantling

Straight felling is the fastest and most economical method — a single cut at the base brings the whole tree down in one direction. It's only suitable where there's at least 1.5× the tree's height in clear drop zone and no underground services in the fall path. On a typical Stafford garden plot, this is rarely possible.

Sectional dismantling means a climber ascends the tree and removes it piece by piece from the top down, often using ropes and rigging blocks to lower heavy sections gently to the ground. It costs more — typically 40–80% above straight felling — but it's the only safe approach for trees near houses, conservatories, fences or overhead cables. We'll always tell you up front which method your tree needs and why.

### Tree Species We Commonly Fell in Staffordshire

Leylandii and Lawson cypress dominate the suburban felling work — fast-growing conifers planted as cheap screening in the 1990s that have outgrown gardens twenty years later. Sycamore, ash (often Chalara-affected), silver birch and Norway spruce are the next most common. Mature oak, beech and lime usually only come down for safety reasons or as part of a managed felling programme.

Each species behaves differently under the saw. Sycamore is unpredictable and prone to barber-chairing without proper notch technique. Ash with dieback is brittle and dangerous to climb. Conifers split easily if rigged badly. Knowing which is which is the difference between a clean job and a callback.

### What Happens to the Wood

All arisings are removed by default — chip goes one way, logs the other. If you'd like to keep firewood, we'll cut to length and stack it where you want it for free. For larger trunks, we offer on-site timber milling: turning your felled oak, ash or sycamore into usable boards for worktops, shelving, mantelpieces or tables. Timber stays on your property; nothing goes to landfill that doesn't have to.

Every job is covered by £1m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
