Hedge reduction means lowering an overgrown hedge by a substantial amount — typically 1m or more in height, or significant width on the sides. Done correctly, it brings the hedge back into proportion and makes it manageable to trim annually thereafter. Done badly, it can kill the hedge. Different species respond differently. Yew, beech, hornbeam and privet regenerate well from old wood. Leylandii, Lawson cypress, Western red cedar and most conifers do NOT — cut into brown wood and it stays brown forever. Knowing which species can take which treatment is essential. Most reduction jobs take a single day for a typical garden boundary. These can be cut into bare wood and will reshoot within 1–2 seasons. Poor / no regeneration: leylandii, Lawson cypress, Western red cedar, Thuja, juniper, most other conifers. Cut into brown wood and it stays brown — the only fix is removal.
