## What is Deadwood Removal?

Deadwood removal is the targeted clearing of dead, dying, broken or hanging branches from a tree's canopy. It's one of the highest-value safety services we offer — the cost of a single failed limb landing on a car, conservatory or person dwarfs the cost of removing it preventatively.

Mature trees naturally shed deadwood, particularly in summer drought conditions and after winter storms. Oak, ash, beech, sycamore and lime are all prolific producers of deadwood. Ash dieback has dramatically increased the volume of deadwood in Staffordshire's tree population.

Our climbers inspect every major branch from above — far more reliable than a ground-based view — and cleanly remove anything dead, weakly attached or showing decay.

### Who It's For

- Owners of mature trees over public footpaths, drives or seating areas
- Schools, nurseries and care homes with trees on site
- Commercial premises with trees over car parks
- Anyone with an ash tree showing dieback symptoms

### When It's Needed

- Visible dead branches in the upper canopy
- Branches falling without warning during calm weather
- Following major storm events
- Annual safety inspection on managed sites

## What Happens If You Leave It

Dead branches don't fall on schedule. They fall on still summer afternoons when no one expects it. The Tree Council estimates 5–6 deaths per year in the UK from falling tree limbs — most of them avoidable.

Insurance liability sits with the tree owner. If a known dead branch fails and injures someone, 'I didn't know' is rarely an acceptable defence. Documented inspection and removal is the best protection.

## Deadwood Removal: The Full Detail

### Why Trees Produce Deadwood

Deadwood is a natural part of tree growth. As the canopy expands, lower or interior branches are shaded out and die naturally. Drought stress, root damage, fungal infection and physical injury all accelerate the process.

Some species — oak in particular — retain deadwood for decades, providing valuable habitat for invertebrates and woodpeckers. Where safety allows, we leave habitat deadwood in low-target areas. Over paths and roads, it all comes down.

### Ash Dieback & The Staffordshire Picture

Chalara dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) has now infected the vast majority of Staffordshire's ash population. Affected trees become brittle and dangerous to climb within a few years of symptoms appearing. Early intervention — deadwood removal while the tree is still climbable — is far cheaper than later sectional dismantling.

Every job is covered by £1m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.
