## What is Crown Reduction, Lifting & Thinning?

Crown work is the umbrella term for three related pruning techniques — reduction (shortening), lifting (raising lower canopy) and thinning (selective branch removal). Each has a distinct purpose, and most jobs combine two or three to achieve the right result.

Done together by a skilled climber, crown work transforms a heavy, overgrown or unbalanced tree back into a healthy, manageable specimen. It's the single most-requested service for established gardens in Stafford and across Staffordshire.

Every reduction we carry out is specified by percentage and target points — not a vague 'cut it back a bit'. You get a written specification before work starts so the result is exactly what you signed off.

### Who It's For

- Homeowners with overgrown or oversized trees
- Properties losing light or garden usability
- Insurers managing subsidence risk
- Anyone whose neighbour has complained about overhanging branches

### When It's Needed

- Tree is too tall, too wide or top-heavy
- Branches overhang property, road or garden you don't own
- Canopy is blocking significant light
- Tree is in a high-wind exposed site
- Subsidence risk to nearby foundations on clay soil

## What Happens If You Leave It

Topping a tree — cutting major limbs back to stubs — is still common, and it's the worst thing you can do to a healthy tree. The tree responds with hundreds of weakly attached epicormic shoots that grow faster than the original limbs, are far more prone to failure, and ruin the tree's shape permanently. Within five years you're paying again, with worse results.

Crown reduction done properly — to BS 3998 — cuts back to suitable lateral growth points so the tree heals naturally, retains its shape and grows back evenly over years, not seasons.

## Why Choose RJ Hutchinson

### Natural Form Preserved

Reductions cut to lateral growth points, never to stubs.

### Light & Space Restored

Lifting and thinning open up gardens without losing the tree.

### Storm Risk Reduced

Lower sail area means less wind load and less limb failure risk.

### Subsidence Protection

Strategic reduction lowers water demand near sensitive foundations.

### Neighbour Disputes Resolved

Overhang removed cleanly, to the boundary, no further than agreed.

### Longer Tree Life

Properly pruned trees outlive topped trees by 20–40 years.

## Crown Reduction, Lifting & Thinning: The Full Detail

### Reduction vs Lifting vs Thinning Explained

Crown reduction shortens the canopy from the top and outer edges, typically by 1–3 metres or 10–30% of overall size. It reduces the tree's footprint and sail area while keeping its natural shape. Best for tall trees encroaching on space.

Crown lifting removes the lower branches to raise clearance from the ground — minimum 2.5m for pedestrian areas, 5.2m for highways. Best for tree underneath which you want to walk, mow or park.

Crown thinning removes a percentage of inner secondary branches (typically 10–20%) to let dappled light and wind through the canopy. Best for mature trees close to houses where overall size needs to stay but density should reduce.

### Specification, Standards & Aftercare

Every quote includes a written specification: percentage to be removed, minimum branch diameter retained, target lateral points and any exclusions. This protects you (you get what was agreed) and us (no scope creep mid-job).

Aftercare is straightforward — most healthy trees need no intervention. We recommend re-inspection in 3–5 years to plan the next cycle. Mulching the root zone with chipped arisings (free of charge) helps moisture retention and root health.

Every job is covered by £1m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.

## Crown Reduction, Lifting & Thinning — Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between reduction and topping?+

Reduction cuts back to lateral growth points — the tree heals and keeps its shape. Topping cuts to stubs — the tree responds with weak watershoots and is permanently damaged.

How much does crown reduction cost?+

Typically £250–£900 per tree depending on size, species and access. Always quoted fixed-price.

When is the best time?+

October–March for most deciduous species; summer for Prunus (cherry, plum).

Will it grow back the same?+

Yes — that's the whole point of BS 3998 pruning. The tree responds with healthy, well-attached new growth.

Do I need TPO permission?+

If protected, yes — we apply on your behalf. Standard turnaround is 8 weeks.

Can you reduce just one side?+

We can, but it unbalances the tree and is rarely advisable. We'll discuss alternatives.

How long does it take?+

Most domestic crown reductions take half a day to one day per tree.

Is the work guaranteed?+

Workmanship is guaranteed; tree response is monitored at follow-up inspection.
