## What is Coppicing?

Coppicing is the traditional practice of cutting selected broadleaf species back to ground level on a rotational cycle, allowing them to regrow as multi-stemmed coppice. It's been practised in British woodlands for over 6,000 years and produces sustainable timber while creating excellent wildlife habitat.

Coppice species — hazel, sweet chestnut, hornbeam, ash, lime, alder, willow — respond by sending up vigorous new shoots from the cut stool. After 7–25 years (depending on species and product), the coppice is harvested again and the cycle repeats. Stools can live for over 1,000 years under proper management.

We carry out coppicing for woodland owners, estates and conservation sites across Staffordshire. Whether it's restoring a neglected coppice compartment or initiating new rotation, we work to traditional methods with modern safety standards.

### Who It's For

- Woodland owners with neglected coppice in need of restoration
- Estates managing productive woodland
- Conservation groups creating wildlife habitat
- Smallholders producing firewood, charcoal or fencing materials

### When It's Needed

- Existing coppice has been left 20+ years and is becoming overstood
- Wildlife management plan calls for canopy gaps and ride widening
- Sustainable timber production is desired
- Woodland regeneration is required

## What Happens If You Leave It

Neglected coppice loses its value year on year. Stools become overstood, single-stem trees take over, ground flora disappears under heavy shade and the woodland's wildlife value drops dramatically. Restoration becomes more expensive — and less successful — the longer it's left.

Coppicing the wrong species (mature oak, beech) is destructive and won't regenerate. Cutting the wrong way (leaving high stumps, ragged cuts) kills the stool and ends the rotation.

## Why Choose RJ Hutchinson

### Sustainable Timber

Renewable harvest every 7–25 years with no replanting needed.

### Extended Stool Life

Coppiced stools can live 1,000+ years — far longer than mature trees.

### Biodiversity Boost

Open glades following coppicing support nightingales, dormice, butterflies.

### Useful Products

Firewood, fencing, hurdles, charcoal, walking sticks, beanpoles.

### Carbon Lockup

Long-lived stools and timber products lock carbon for decades.

### Traditional Skills Retained

Coppicing is a recognised heritage skill — we work to traditional standards.

## Coppicing: The Full Detail

### Cycle Lengths By Species & Product

Hazel: 7–10 years for hurdle rods and beanpoles. Sweet chestnut: 12–18 years for fencing and stakes. Hornbeam: 15–20 years for firewood. Ash (where dieback-free): 15–25 years. Alder & willow: 5–10 years.

Cutting is done in winter (November–March) when the stool is dormant and energy reserves are stored in the roots. Cuts are made low (within 15cm of ground) and angled so water runs off.

### Deer Pressure & Protection

Newly coppiced stools are extremely vulnerable to deer browsing. Without protection, regeneration can fail entirely. We can install temporary fencing, brash protection or deer guards as part of the works — usually essential in Staffordshire's deer-heavy woodlands.

Every job is covered by £1m Public Liability Insurance and carried out under method statements and risk assessments tailored to your site.

## Coppicing — Frequently Asked Questions

Is my woodland suitable for coppicing?+

If it contains hazel, sweet chestnut, hornbeam, ash, alder or willow — likely yes. We'll survey it for free.

How much area can be coppiced at once?+

Typically 0.25–1 hectare per compartment per year, depending on rotation length.

What permissions are needed?+

Felling licences are required from the Forestry Commission for over 5m³ of timber per quarter; we apply on your behalf.

Can the timber be sold?+

Yes — we can arrange off-take for firewood, fencing or charcoal production.

How long until regrowth is visible?+

First year shoots appear within 8 weeks of cutting; substantial regrowth by end of first growing season.

Do you handle deer protection?+

Yes, included in the quote where needed.

Is it expensive?+

Costs are usually offset by the timber value. We can quote net cost after sale of arisings.

Will it harm the woodland?+

On suitable species, no — coppicing has been practised for millennia and creates the most biodiverse woodland habitat in Britain.
